Just keep 'em alive till 7

I wrote this a few months ago after my first blog, never posted it, but thought I would since it's been saved on my phone for a long time. Right now, I'm on my 5th night shift in a row, only one more to go, hope I make it...

So it's night shift in the picu and I'm bored out of my mind. Just glad that its a quiet night so far...probably shouldn't have said that. Nurses are some of the most superstitious people on earth. Us and baseball players. You should never announce "its sure a quiet night tonight" because suddenly out of nowhere, you've got the next admit, your other patient had a poop blowout and they are finger painting with it. Oh for the love. The last few nights though have been horribly slow. I swear I've had the healthiest kids on the unit, as you can tell by the fact I have time to write this blog from my touch phone. Just staying awake until 7 is my goal for the night. That is always the goal...making it until 7. Whether it's keeping your patient alive or you staying alive. . I guess it could be worse...it could be one of those nights that you are not only hoping that your patient doesn't have the dreaded blowout, but that you don't get caught with everyone staring at you because your head just hit the desk in front of you due to exhaustion. Of course not all nights are like this, some are filled with adrenaline and you don't stop running until you pass on the buck during report for the next shift. My job as a nurse never stays dull and is always changing. Oh I love my job. Just keep 'em alive till 7
